Les constructions funéraires du Néolithique européen se caractérisent par leur monumentalité, leur complexité architecturale, la diversité des dépôts funéraires et la présence occasionnelle de décors pariétaux. Elles sont de véritables « architectures » au sens où ces différents éléments combinés constituent un espace tridimensionnel pensé et construit, lui-même superposé à un espace naturel. La construction et l’utilisation de ces monuments nécessitent un certain nombre de choix à différentes échelles de l’espace : où construire le monument dans le paysage ? Quelle forme extérieure lui donner ? Comment agencer ses différentes structures internes ? Où y déposer restes mortuaires et mobiliers funéraires ? Où y placer signes et figures gravées ou peintes ? L’espace est donc une problématique essentielle, au cœur même de ces monuments, à laquelle pourtant aucune étude générale n’a été consacrée à l’échelle européenne.
Ce colloque analysera les différents rapports délibérés et organisés avec l’espace à l’intérieur et autour des sépultures monumentales de l’Europe néolithique (chambres ou coffre sous tumulus ou cairns, tertres, hypogées, etc.). Il invitera et regroupera pour la première fois études récentes et synthèses portant sur la configuration de l’architecture de ces tombes, l’organisation spatiale des dépôts funéraires, l’organisation spatiale des représentations pariétales, et/ou les relations entre tombe et environnement naturel. Seront privilégiées les communications portant sur l’objet et la période du colloque, mais des regards extérieurs (chronologiquement ou géographiquement) traitant de la même problématique seront également les bienvenus.
Le premier objectif de la rencontre sera d’identifier les différents choix spatiaux mis en œuvre et articulés à différentes échelles, à l’intérieur et autour des tombes. Comment l’étude du paysage, de l’architecture, des pratiques funéraires et des décors pariétaux nous renseignent sur certains rapports particuliers à l’espace ? En quoi ces rapports à l’espace ont évolué dans le temps ? Quelles divergences et quelles convergences entre régions européennes ?
Le second objectif sera d’interpréter ces choix. Quelles sont les fonctions des différents espaces architecturaux ? Quel est le rôle de l’espace naturel autour des tombes ? En quoi ces rapports particuliers à l’espace nous renseignent sur les structures et pratiques sociales des populations néolithiques européennes ? En quoi nous renseignent-ils sur leurs conceptions symboliques et leurs représentations de l’espace funéraire ?

Functions, uses and representations of space in the monumental graves of Neolithic Europe

The funerary constructions of Neolithic Europe are characterised by their monumentality, their architectural complexity, the diversity of their funerary deposits and by occasional presence of parietal art. They are genuine ‘architectures’ in the sense that the combination of these various components forms a thought-out and built three-dimensional space, itself superimposed on a natural space. The construction and use of these monuments involve a large number of choices on different scales of space: where built the monument in the landscape? How design its external shape? How organize its various internal structures? What location for the mortuary remains and funerary objects? What location for the carved or painted symbols? Space then is a central and essential issue for these monuments, to which no general study on a European scale has ever been devoted.
This conference will analyse the deliberate and organized relationships with space that are found inside the monumental graves of Neolithic Europe (mounds, cairns, tumuli, chambered tombs, hypogea, etc.) It will invite and gather for the first time recent studies and syntheses focusing on the configuration of the tombs’ architecture, the spatial organization of the funerary deposits, the spatial organization of the parietal motifs, and/or the relationships between tombs and natural landscape. Papers on the object and period of the conference will be preferred but external studies (from a chronological and geographical point of view) dealing with the central question of the conference will also be welcomed.
The first objective of the conference will be the identification of the various spatial choices involved and articulated on different scales inside and outside the tombs. How an analysis of the landscape, architecture, funerary practices and parietal motifs can inform us about particular relationships with space? How these relationships evolved in time? What divergences and convergences can be found between the different regions of Europe?
The second objective will be to interpret these choices. What were the functions of the various architectural spaces inside the tombs? What was the role of the natural space around the tombs? How the particular relationships with space inform us about the social structures and practices of the Neolithic people in Europe? How they inform us about their symbolic conceptions and representations of the funerary space?

Theme 2 – The spatial organisation of the necropolis: functional, social and symbolic aspects.
Theme 3 – The landscape setting of the tombs: territorial and symbolic structuration of space.
